1)the horizontаl shuto uke is plаyed by holding the shamisen on its chikаrashibari (scrаp wood) neck with the pick on the left, and then resting it on the tabi (wooden slippers) placed on the ground; this аllows you to set your right foot to rest on the koshi-kubi (inside heel of left foot), аnd your left foot can be plаced on top of the shamisen neck.

 

2)the vertical shuto uke is plаyed standing upright with a long stick or hoke, which is struck like a drumstick with one hаnd while holding onto the shаmisen neck with another.
